Dream To Teach Others How To Save Money

I'm afraid I'm an avid penny-pincher. That's not to say I'm not generous with my money when it comes to firiends and family but I have a passion for finding the best deals in all areas of my spending. As a result I paid off my mortgage in 2009 after just 2.5 years. I have helped friends and family to save money on their expenditures (they find it fun and so do I)and have been told many times that I should do it for a living. I do not offer details of specific products etc but merely teach/coach people the processes for locating the best deals etc. I am now considering possibilities and wonder if anyone knows if "money saving coaching" (for want of a better phrase) requires specific qualifications other coaching certificates. I have to say after all these years of skinflinting I believe that I'm more than qualified.

    Hi Jeremy

Welcome on board. I would think your credibility will come demonstrating the results and savings you help people achieve rather than any qualification. Do you have some success stories?

    Hi Jeremy,

I think you couldn't have picked a better moment to launch this kind of business. No need for coaching qualifications in order to get going, as Nick says, the best thing you can probably do is to get some hard results under your belt. Your own story is inspiring – but having success stories (case studies) will make all the difference becasue it will show you can translate your own success into success for others.

Do you remember the TV show called Pay Off Your Mortgage in 2 Years? I think that this is a brilliant angle of come at this from, because it's attention getting, and it's an outcome that people want (I know I do).

    Cheers,

    Niki

Thanks for this advice. Funny but I was considering the mortgage pay-off angle myself. This seems the best route for me.

I wonder if at this stage instead of direct coaching (in view of imminent family constraints) I should consider a publication of some sort describing how we paid off the mortgage in the time span - an e-book (this might be offered free but with embedded paying affiliate links) or POD publication - with a back up web site/blog site with regular updates pointing people to mt latest money saving discoveries.

    Hi Jeremy,

Yeah – it depends on which aspects of your business are going to be your revenue streams...

… the standard information products model is to offer some kind of freebie on your website in exchange for people's personal details (name and e-mail address), and then use the free product to build a connection (and some trust) with your prospects, and then sell them on some kind of premium offering like coaching, live events, CD or DVD sets, digital downloads, or even a home study course. In the freebie, one strategy is to share the “territory” you cover, but not the detailed ins-and-outs of the implementation of your ideas.

… I'd probably focus on getting a really great freebie on your site first, because without one, it's much harder to build the tribe who will ultimately become your customers. Also, have you considered running some kind of free / paid membership based offering? The main sell could be the time saving angle, and that you are sharing your extensive money saving research, which would be impossible for them to compile on their own. Could you offer exclusive money saving offers? Just look at Martin Lewis, who has built a mega-brand around just such an idea. How will you differentiate yourself from the likes of him?

… we actually have some free information on the basic infoproducts business structure here, and as it happens, I'll be talking about this subject on Wednesday at the February gathering, so perhaps we can catch up after the event, if you're coming along.

    Cheers,

    Niki

    Niki

I see this overall as a multi-levelled project. The underlying message being that you pay off the mortgage and this opens up a multitude of opportunities for your future life - to downshift and take life easier at any age, to change careers, to start a business idea, to become more involved in your local community, work with charities, travel etc. The great thing is that I am living this and going through the processes. In my medical world I meet an awful lot of professional people who are stressed out with the grind and feel stuck. However, in reality they are not - a change in approach to finances is the first step, then broadening their horizons, defining ideas about their future lives and then actioning their dreams.

I am an admirer of International Living www.internationalliving.com. Their teaser is a nice little free e-report the No Savings Retirement Plan with an intro to their service - info re. the best places to live cheaply in the world essentially. I would see this as a possible model for my own project - with a possible monthly fee for full membership to the community. Free access to some limited articles etc. Members would receive full support in helping to pay off their mortgage plus help in developing ideas about their future lives, and once they had achieved mortgage pay off further ongoing support to develop their new life as part of a community of like-minded people.

Re: Dream To Teach Others How To Save Money

Have been away for a while - but  with good reason. Our second son, Oliver Charles Nicholas, was  born at  home on the 18th Feb. Had to remember a bit of my obstetric training (very rusty, I'm afraid!) as No 2 son ended up being delivered on the bedroom floor (on a warm blanket I would add). Things all going well and this afternoon have snatched some quiet time to start planning the workbook for the mortgage freedom programme.
