When an inspiration strikes, do you jump and grab the chance, following your instinct?

Hi, my name is Hana, I live in Devon and thats where I first met Nick a year ago at Quest:)

What I wanted to ask was whether if you saw a good business opportunity, and you had to make a fast decision, you would jump at it or let it go because you felt you didnt have enough information at that time.

I have a passion for exotic snake keeping, only recent though, with not enough experience behid me. A chain of coincidences, that looked suspiciously ominious, has brought me an amazing and unusual opportunity to buy a breeding pair of a rare type of a large snake, at a very good price. I was told by various specialists that if I successfuly bred these snakes, I would basically be in for a good prosperous life. Until now I have been struggling with releasing my lifelong poverty consciousness and never made it beyond survival levels financially.

So I feel very tempted to buy them and set up a breeding project as my little business, which I am told could be something special. These snakes also have special genes for their colour and pattern, which could potentially lead to creating a first world's fully white snake of these impressive species. So its a very potent opportunity.

But my block is that I don't feel fully ready to take this project on. I have various fears digging their heels in, ie I dont actually have enough money at the moment to afford their longterm maintenance, don't have enough experience with this particular tricky breed, cannot drive and need another person by law to handle these snakes with me, therefore I would be always dependant on another person - Im not self sufficient enough to make this reliably happen.. Only live in rented property which was already hard enough to find with just my smaller snakes :)

I have been obscessed with this possibility for the last two days. The decision about the purchase will have to be made within a week or less. I feel pulled from left to right between the tremendous potential there and my concerns, that I am basically not ready/capable to do it.

How does one reach decisions, especially under a time pressure? Should I reach for the stars but take on risks, or stay small but safe and close to the ground? Is there a happy middle and how does one identify it? I would appreciate any helpful tips:) Thank you..

    Hi Hana,

I think this is partly about getting as clear as possible about the potential risks and rewards, and having a solid action plan should you choose to proceed....

A bunch of questions spring to mind -

    • Does part of you suspect that there's some kind of catch with these snakes? You used the words ‘suspiciously ominous'. Is the seller reputable? Is there a clear reason for the discount? Are the snakes 100% healthy?
    • Have you had multiple independent specialists review these snakes? What did they say? If these snakes are such a great buy - how come they haven't been snapped up yet?
    • What are the chances of these snakes being bred successfully? What are the chances of producing the white variation of the breed? What are the offspring likely to be worth - pure white / not? How many offspring are you likely to produce per year? Are they going to be easy to sell?
    • Do you have a plan for managing the maintainance costs?
    • Is there any possibility to recruit a business parter to share the costs and the maintainance work?
    • Would the current owner be willing to help you with the maintainance / costs in exchange for a share of the upside if the snakes become profitable?
    • If you struggle with the maintainance - how easy would it be for you to sell the snakes on? Could this be done at a tidy profit?

... best of luck with your decision :o)

     Hi Hana

As well as Niki's great thoughts, I woudl also suggest:

    1. Remove the time element - decide what you'd do if you have all the time you need.

    2. You'll probably never feel ready - I very rarely feel ready for my next projects - I become ready by starting them - one of my favourite quotations is from Sheldon Kopp who said, "I have never embarked upon a journey for whih I felt adequately prepared.

    Don't know if that helps

    Hi Hana,

Are any of us really ready to take that giant leap of faith?  How would you feel if you passed on this opportunity and someone else grabbed it and was really successful?  Sometimes you just have to go for it having weighed up all the options.

As a fellow animal lover (guinea pigs in my case!), my main concern would be that you can provide a good quality of life for the snakes and meet all their needs.  I would certainly want them checked out by an independent specialist before parting with any money and taking them on.

The other big question is...do you have an experienced vet who can look after the snakes if they get sick?  Believe it or not, guinea-competent vets are a rare species as they receive very little training on them, so my guess is reptile specialists are going to be even harder to come by.  Without a good vet, it is very hard to get by.  I always encourage people to find a good vet before they actually need one.

The best way to learn about any species is to keep them yourself.  I've learned so much about guineas over the past 10 years and have also done my "Inspired Entrepreneur bit" and built a business around them producing aromatherapy skincare products. Previously I was a corporate slave and managed to work 3 days a week with 2 days a week to do my own thing.  After 3 years of doing that, I took the plunge and left the corporate world and never looked back.

Good luck with whatever you decide, and do let us know how you get on.

Hello Niki, Nick and Chrissie (and 9 Gorgeous Guineas :) )

thank you so much for your kind and inspirational replies:)

Yes, one thing I can certainly resonate with - that I believe that its quite normal not to feel prepared and that one learns on the job. At least thats how it often was with things in my life, but when it comes to business, I have always allowed my fears to suade me away from my direction. Well, Im in  very different place in my life and think I might just not let them this time, the morsel is too big. Yes, as you said, Chrissie, I would feel absolutely awfull if a while later I saw someone else succeeding with these babies only because they had more guts that I had!

Thank you very much for all your suggested questions, they are very helpfull, especially as I have never before really put a business hat on and did most things on an amateurish, good intention basis. Now its time to think serious and I have certainly been pushed to places, mentally, since this offer came up, that I have never been to. I think of these snakes first thing in the morning when I wake upMy little babes

and last thing before I fall asleep...and I dream about them all night long :)))) My head has been pounding with this crazy project ever since it came up.

Its crazy because it has already taken me onto a steep learning curve -  and I have not even bought them yet. Yet I already made friends from US who also breed this type of snake and they congratulated me on getting this opportunity and said, that if I produce young ones, they will buy the whole litter. Other reptile traders were also very interested. That shows that they really are desirable, interenet search also confirmed that. I also do know that these don't breed easily but I have a few hopefull tricks up my sleeve and feel that I have as good chance as anybody to succeed and keen to give it a go.

As you suggested, Niki, I feel that if I can't cope with them, or they won't breed, I will be always able to sell them on favourably. The fact the owner is selling is because they are moving abroad to do another snake related work and are under time pressure. I just spoke to them again and they say that as its a fairly big project, there just doesn't seem to be anybody around at the moment who has the interest/space/availability/money and courage (as they have a reputation of possible "challenging behaviour" as  a species). I just, perhaps by pure chance, seem to have all of those at the moment, and feel that there is a bit of a fatal attraction going on there. Everyday more and more information crops up, some warnings and more encouragement, its like doing a 5 steps forward, 3 steps back dance, or like a praying mantis mating dance:)) (she bites off her boyfriend's head afterwards :)) Well tonite the messages ended up on a happy note and I am feeling quite positive I will go ahead.

Because these snakes are so special, most people who hear about them become very interested. I have already gathered some help and support and searching around for a possible business partner for the project. But I am worried about making legal mistakes etc because I really do not have much experience on that level and can't afford to hire solicitors for every little arrangement. Would you be able to suggest any good begginer's read about law and business partnerships, anything to help me avoid various fatal mistakes.

But on the whole, this project seems to want to go ahead, all doors are opening. A good friend wants to lend me money as an initial capital, possibly interested in an ongoing investment etc. Yes Chrissie, I am lucky that I live near a zoo and the local vet is their reptile specialist. No, I have never done this on such a scale before, but like yourself, I too believe that I will learn most about these amazing animals by living with them. By the way, you made me giggle with amusement - whoever heard of a guinea pig only aromatherapy - you rock:))! I do love it when I hear of such unique and funny ideas:) You'd be surprised what kind of things comes to my mind when Im thinking what else I could do with these darlings to earn a living! I want to build them an incredible artistic Gaudi-like mosaic enclosure and water pool, as I am primarily a creative artist and make them available to public for viewing, like a beautiful animal sanctuary type, perhaps just on an occassional basis, ie childrens parties or so. They are so educational, and so many people are irrationally affraid of snakes (well, with these ones there might be something to it, but I also have some harmless little ones) and I feel on a mission to reduce snakophobia rates.

Do you still think this could get somewhere? :) Do you like my "product"? Thank you for all your encouragement and support, its walking me through this together with other emails and calls Im making. I will let you know what I decided.

Best wishes with all your inspired work to all,

    Hana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Hi Hana,

It's great to see pigtures of your "babies".  Unfortunately I can't see a large snake as anything other than a predator who would probably love to have a guinea pig as a little snack..........each to their own!!!  However, it's your passion (which comes across very strongly) and I'm sure you could make a go of it.

I've found that if you get presented with an opportunity like this and choose to go with the flow, things will often come to fruition but not always in the way that you expect.  You must be doing something right if doors are starting to open and things are unfolding in the way that they are:)  One thing I would recommend is that you start putting your thoughts / ideas / inspiration / plans down on paper to focus your thoughts and any concerns you have about money.  You might even find that missing piece of the jigsaw that will make everything slot into place perfectly.

It's great to hear that you've got a local reptile specialist vet, that will make life so much easier for you.  I love the idea of a Gaudi-like enclosure, that would be a really different and stylish place for the snakes to live.

    As Nike say...."just do it"!

:)) I know...sorry about this crossing of interests! I promise I will not bring my business with me if I ever come to visit your sanctuary:) I just have to look at these things as a fact of life (If you ever watched Blue Planet you can't help but embrace the paradox of ever predatory circle of life). Many of reptile loving friends also keep ie fancy rats as pets, its just an attitude of mind I suppose and the issue of good care, love and compassion at every stage and to every living being under the circumstances. Some people object to certain types of animal being kept in captivity, but I find my other snakes are very happy and human loving pets, contented with so little and giving off so much joy and fascination, just by being observed or petted, by children or adults alike:) I also believe, based on my shamanic knowledge, that like humans, animals also chose where they are born, and if that is in captivity thats probably because they have a lot to teach us, heal us and co-create with us. I have utter respect for animals and get so much joy from interacting with them.

Chrissie, do you know this book: Straight from the Horse's mouth - How to talk to animals and get answers, by a famous "animal whisperer (communicator) " Amelia Kinkade http://www.ameliakinkade.com/ She is coming to the UK in July, Id love to do her workshop as she gets amazing and precise results and succesfully teaches people to do the same:)

Yes, will now start pulling all the threads together and putting it down on paper. The eternal question - anybody could advise me on good sources of small business funding?

Thank you Chrissie again for your encouragement, affirmation and suggestions,

    best wishes,

    Hana

HI hana - I don't know about snakes or guinea pigs but I do know about people.

Your gut or intuition is telling you to go go go, and your intellect is giving you all sorts of reasons why not.

We all have these voices, but as previously stated, look at the pros and cons. However, if you think the gains will be more than the risks if you 'fail' - and 'risks' don't just mean money, then have a go!

There's learning, growth, fun, love and fulfillment in doing something you really love to do.

Waking up thinking of snakes says it all!

I am often awake at 05.00 with another new plan for happynurses!
