Improving my return on Google Adwords

     Hi Niki,

In the workshop Building your Expert Brand, you gave me some tips on improving responses on Pay per Click from my ad on Google Adwords, but I didn't write them in my notes.

You mentioned using Google Analytics. Please could you take me - and anyone else - through this.

    Many thanks

    Sam

    Hi Sam,

Sure - can you remember any more details from that conversation? There’s lot’s of different ways of approaching this...

Off the top of my head we use the following –

    • Testing different advertising creative to improve click throughs.
    • Improving keyword research using tools like WordTracker to broaden reach and get access to more (cheaper) traffic.
    • Having a granular ad-group structure (with only a handful of related keywords per ad-group) so that you can get clearer results.
    • Optimising the campaign regularly.
    • Installing conversion tracking so that you can figure out your cost per lead / sale for the various keywords.
    • Using your PPC results to feed into your search engine optimisation efforts.

Do any of these sound familiar?

    Cheers,

    Niki

     Hi Niki,

Thanks for this. I don't remember much of this.

Can you please explain what a granular ad-group structure is.

Should each page on my site have a relevant keyword showing a few times?

    Best wishes,

    Sam

    Hi Sam,

When creating a Google Adwords campaign, a common rookie mistake is to create a bunch of adverts, research a bunch of keywords, and then run them all in the same ad-group.

... the problem with this approach is that you can never tell which advert / keyword combinations are the most successful – everything kinda gets averaged out in the mix...

Instead I usually create much smaller ad-groups with very narrow groups of keywords (sometimes even a single keyword per group if it’s a major search term) so that I can tell which adverts work the best for which keywords...

Also, you’ll want to write adverts that are highly specific to each group. If you need any help with your campaign – let me know...

That’s more of a Search Engine Optimisation question... The simple answer is “yes” – especially in the title and headings of your pages (ask your webdeveloper). This takes some planning and testing to get best results, but you can use the statistics from your Google Adwords campaign to help you figure out which search terms are the best ones to target.

    Cheers,

    Niki

You might want to make sure you understand the Google Quality Score a.k.a. the Google Slap.

A very quick search turned up this article:

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for that Gordon.  I really don't understand Google lingo, but I'll try and learn it some time!
